Situated at the delta apex of the Nile River on the 30th Parallel North (29.9792° N), Cairo and the Giza Plateau represent the ancient primordial landmass (Benben Stone) of Egyptian creation theology.
In 820 AD the Abbasid Caliph al-Ma'mūn — founder of Baghdad's House of Wisdom — ordered his engineers to tunnel into the Great Pyramid's north face, hunting the treasure his astronomers promised lay within. The forced passage his men cut is the very corridor tourists enter today: every modern visitor walks a ninth-century act of Hermetic longing.
What drew the Caliph was not gold but a tradition. Medieval Arab scholarship held that the pyramids were built before the Flood by Hermes — whom the Qur'anic tradition names Idrīs, and Hebrew scripture Enoch — as vaults to preserve the sciences from the coming water. In this reading Giza is not a tomb complex but a library in stone, sealed by the first initiate against the drowning of the world. The Greeks made Thoth into Hermes Trismegistus; the Corpus Hermeticum that reached Cosimo de' Medici in 1460 (see Volume I: Florence) claims descent from precisely this Egyptian source. The Speed-of-Light Koan. the latitude 29.9792458° N passes through the Great Pyramid, and the same digits measure light in a vacuum (299,792,458 m/s) — coincidence by every academic account, scripture to the modern Hermeticist. Hold both readings at once; that is the discipline of this codex.
