Founded in 1123 AD by Rahere, a courtier of King Henry I who experienced a visionary healing in Rome, St. Bartholomew-the-Great is London's oldest surviving church. Its heavy Norman apse arches and subterranean crypt preserve the authentic monastic atmosphere of 12th-century London.
