Completed in 1270, the Altneuschul is Europe's oldest active synagogue, its early Gothic twin-nave vaults borne on two great octagonal pillars. According to Prague Kabbalistic lore, Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel created the Golem out of river clay from the Vltava, animating it with the sacred name EMETH ('Truth'). The sleeping Golem's remains are said to lie sealed in the synagogue attic.
