Founded in 711 AD, Fushimi Inari is dedicated to Inari, the Shinto deity of rice, sake, and prosperity. The Senbon Torii consists of over 10,000 vermilion wooden gates forming a glowing red tunnel up Mount Inari. In Shinto alchemy, vermilion (Cinnabar / Mercury Sulfide) acts as a purifying solar barrier against malevolent spirits.
