Created in the late 15th century, Ryoan-ji's Karesansui (dry landscape) rock garden features 15 moss-covered rocks arranged on raked white gravel inside a rectangular clay wall. From any vantage point on the veranda, at least one rock is hidden from view, symbolizing that human physical senses cannot perceive the entire universe simultaneously.
